It is conventional wisdom that we live in a world that is not only much more "connected" than the world of our parents, but a world that is becoming more globally connected every day. The genie is out of the bottle. There is no turning back. Given our global interdependence and the undeniable impact it will have on our children's lives and livelihoods, we owe them a thoughtful global education.
A global education is much more than the countries and capital map exercises of our childhoods. Rather, we need to help students develop the competencies essential for success in a global environment. Those competencies include perspective consciousness, understanding of global issues, knowledge of global interdependence, curiosity and flexibility in cross-cultural situations, and knowledge of global cultures.
